In Mali 1 in 4 children suffer from stunting due to malnutrition, 1 in 5 children are underweight and 1 in 10 children suffer from severe malnutrition.
The causes of childhood malnutrition are multiple: limited food available, there is little water and often it is not clean, it is difficult to guarantee adequate hygiene levels, in these environments, children suffer from many diseases, very often mothers do not know the right practices of breastfeeding and food preparation.
For this reason, the fight against malnutrition must be considered among the strategies that bring together food security, improvement of health services, access to drinking water, ensuring substantial and sustainable results.
With this project, the first result that COOPI Suisse wants to achieve in the health districts of Ségou and Barouéli is to ensure the community mechanisms for the prevention and screening of acute malnutrition in the health districts of Barouéli and Ségou, through the following activities:- provide the material to produce drinking water, ensuring it is clean, and purchase the tools necessary for health care in healthcare facility that deals with cases of serious malnutrition
- raise awareness in specific hygiene practices among mothers of children affected by severe malnutrition
- distribute hygiene kits to families with severely malnourished children throughout the treatment period until recovery, activities carried out by local health services in collaboration with COOPI Mali
- teaching mothers simple techniques of cognitive stimulation of malnourished children to avoid brain failure, activities carried out by local health services in collaboration with COOPI Mali
