Reconstruction of primary school in Ngaoundaye

Direct Recipients: 668 children (337 males and 331 females) attending Ngaoundaye school (aged between 6 and 11)

During the crisis of these last 3 years, all existing school services have being destroyed and the ones remaining are characterized by a complete malfunction. School and education level in RCA, already poor in quality and structure, has further worsened because of political and military troubles affecting the country in the last years. From the beginning of school year, September/October 2014, to middle February 2015, schools have been functioning only for an average of four weeks. The situation of violence and insecurity has serious consequences on the education and attending rate for children at school.

The Ohuam-Pendè is one of the most populated areas of Central African Republic, with more than 430.000 inhabitants. The 27% of rural population of the country is concentrated here. Access to education in this area is particularly penalized. The infrastructures are not sufficient to welcome all population in school age. The space available is often temporary and overcrowded, which has negative consequences both on education quality and attendance frequency. Scholarly rate is on average 30%, while for the female population is decreases to 18%. The teaching level is low and the community support to school system is weak.

The key to positive development of a country is in the education of young and children. To achieve this, a strong support in this sector is fundamental to make long term development sustainable.

Namely, the crisis going on in Central African Republic is also related to the ongoing degradation of national school and education system. Young people without proper education did not develop sufficient knowledge and competencies, analytical and critical attributes to act against the development of the conflict. Therefore, they are still manipulated by the political and cultural situation.

In the present emergency situation after the acute phase of the conflict, actions to support the school system work in favor of children needs in terms of physical and psychological protection. Specifically, this is important in an area of armed conflict, where children are subject to violence and recruitment by armed groups and clans. Education helps reducing the psycho-social impact of conflicts, giving a perception of normality and stability, and hope for the future. It becomes a way to protect children from exploitation and violence.

General Goal: to contribute to the restart of school national system, by increasing basic school services and creating an educational space of protection and peace for population of under-prefecture in Ngaoundaye, Central African Republic

Specific Goal: support primary education through construction of the school of Ngaoundaye building

Preset Result: access to primary education for children in school age between 6 and 11 who are affected by armed conflics in the prefecture of Ouham-Pendè is guaranteed.
